A brief history

The company was started in 2004 by founder Ed Holder.  The first branch was located at Crompton Road in Ilkeston, and to say the site was somewhat primitive would be an understatement, so much so that it lacked running water, a toilet and had a slightly temperamental electricity supply.  The company was originally called Soar Valley Timber (Midlands) Limited but after 3 years and a restructuring of the original shareholders the name was changed to S V Timber Limited.

The company was started with a very modest budget and didn't have a customer to its name on day one.  Initially, the office was a giant fridge with a light bulb hanging from the corner so we definitely started from humble beginnings.  We have always remained true to our roots and tried our very best to keep humility at the forefront of our values.

In 2008 the S V Timber Directors set up another timber merchant in Somercotes, Alfreton called Amber Mills Timber.  John Vardy was an original shareholder and the Managing Director and grew the business from scratch into a very successful outlet.  In April 2019, John stepped down as MD and Amber Mills became a branch of S V Timber.

At the start of 2012, the Ilkeston branch relocated from Crompton Road and moved to Belfield Street which has remained its home since then.  Belfield Street has under gone many upgrades including a first floor office expansion providing more room for our ever expanding team.  

2015 saw further expansion for the company with the addition of our new South Wigston, Leicester depot.  The branch has certainly been a success and is a well established supplier of timber throughout Leicestershire and beyond.

The company recently launched a brand new website in 2021 to keep up with the demands of the digital age.  Despite having an eCommerce offering since 2017 the new site is far more consumer friendly and has been well received by the customers that are using it.

Things are never dull at S V Timber and there is always a new project on the horizon.  The future has and always will be an exciting one for us …....................................

As a truly independent merchant we can offer great flexibility, our key philosophies being super service, fantastic products and on the nose competitive pricing.  We offer free delivery throughout the Midlands and are happy to discuss going further afield for you.  Basically if it’s timber or an allied product we do it and we would be delighted to hear from you to look after your specific requirements.

Our team is second to none and not only are they a loyal and long serving bunch but they are extremely knowledgeable and are a lovely set of folk too.
